Character Talks
Posted: February 19, 2019
Our students are learning the importance of showing respect by listening when someone is talking. Whether it's a karate class or at school, our students are encouraged to show respect by listening and waiting for their turn to speak. When someone speaks, it's important to make eye contact, for several reasons. We show respect when we look at someone who is speaking to us. Practicing this habit also helps build confidence in our students.
During each class, our instructors take time to talk with our students about a positive character trait that they should be developing. This month's positive character trait is Respect. We tell our students that Respect is treating others the way they want to be treated. We stress the fact that even though others may not reciprocate, this is a good principle to live by. This month we're talking about various aspects of respect and how we can show respect to others at home, at school, and in the community.Show Respect by Listening

Learn to Set and Achieve Goals
We remind our students how important it is to take care of things that they use or borrow. We ask the question, "If you let someone borrow your bike and they brought it back broken, how would you like it?" This helps to personalize the concept for them. We can show respect to others by being careful and not abusing the privilege of borrowing from friends or institutions like the library or school.
